Chai: chai is best known in the blessing "Le Chai'im!" meaning "To Life!". According to gematria, a system where every Hebrew letter has a numerical value, chai equals the number 18. The Hebrew spelling is het and yod, with the numerical value of eight and ten. Often Jewish people give gifts and charitable donations in increments of eighteen.

The pomegranate symbolizes "the House of (King) David", and is the sixth of the seven species. Pomegranate is associated with Rosh Hashanah. The top of the fruit is shaped like a crown and the midrash tells us it has 613 seeds. The silver ornaments on the staves of the Torah are called Rimmonim (pomegranates), and are likewise decorated with tiny bells.
